bpr were appointed by the University of East London (UEL) to prepare design proposals for the new student centre hubs at the Docklands and Stratford campuses. The hubs allow students to seek advice and support for a wide range of issues from trained university advisers. The facilities include frontline helpdesks for face-to-face advice, interview and counselling rooms for private one-to-one discussions, group meeting rooms, social areas, waiting areas, cashier’s offices, and back office support facilities for staff.  bpr acted as architect and contract administrator from inception to completion.

The form of the helpdesks at Stratford (above) and Docklands (right) have a consistent identifiable form, but the materials vary depending on the context and character of the space.

The functions of the hub are supported by several pieces of bespoke designed joinery items, such as the Infowall, which contain check-in kiosks, TV screens, staff storage, vending facilities, flyer racks, signage, laptop counters, and student seating.

At Docklands, a raised deck area was used to create physical separation between varying functions within the same space. the deck and the sunken pit area, denote helpdesk areas and areas of social activities.

Opaque openings within the Docklands Infowall, which contain historic images of the docks, create a sense of place for students and silhouettes of people movement between the atrium and the hub.
