the pottery, salamanca street

Back to Portfolio

bpr were invited by bloc and Network Rail, to design a mixed-use development at Salamanca Street, Lambeth, incorporating a commercial unit, seven duplexes and two studio apartments.

The site, which is defined by the arches of the viaduct to the west and Pedlars Park to the east, was under-utilised as a temporary storage site and represented a missed opportunity between the viaduct and the park.

Situated close to the former Royal Doulton pottery factory, Southbank House, a Grade II listed building, the proposal's play of colour and graduated brickwork is intended to evoke the flambé glazing of Royal Doulton pottery, recall the industrial origins of Vauxhall and provide a loose cultural connection to the site.

The building was designed as a series of cascading roof terraces which allowed each residential unit either its own roof terrace, or secret garden, thereby meeting Lambeth Council’s demand for private amenity space.
