Finchley Road & Frognal

The passenger numbers at Finchley Road & Frognal are rising year on year and congestion has become an increasing problem during peak hours. BPR proposals attempt to maximise available usable space, by installing new decks to the voids on either side of the existing station building. This effectively doubles the station’s street frontage, improving the station’s presence from the street and therefore creating an inviting passenger environment.
A prime objective of the designs was to improve the visual impact of the station. The concourse roof has been raised to four and a half meters above concourse floor level, improving station visibility from the road, and creating a welcoming environment for customers. An entrance canopy extends over to the pavement, creating a sheltered environment outside the station entrance, thus reducing congestion within the concourse itself.

Much thought has been given to the amount and quality of electrical and natural light within the station. High level glazing to the north, south and east elevations provide a visual connection to the outside. A combination of ceiling, wall and floor mounted lights offers a balance of expressive and practical lighting – improving passenger experience from street to platform.
